Joy to the World!

The season of Joy is upon us as we celebrate and cheer the birth of Christ during Christmas! There are many parts of Christmas or “Christ’s Mass” which are scrutinized by Christians and non Christians alike. But in my opinion from what I have learned through a lot of research, many of the customs and traditions have a reason to be and actually go together to embody the full JOY of Christmas. A lot of the customs have evolved and in my opinion, turn our eyes away from Christ, but from there origin they didn’t start that way. For instance…St Nicholas of Bari was a priest of a well to do family that gave all he had to the poor in faith of God’s word and famously and secretly delivered dowries to daughters of a poor father. He also secretly put gold coins in kids shoes. This was all done during the Christmas season and is today implied with the creation of Santa Claus. Small trees were decorated in the winter months with edibles like apples, dates, and candy canes and were also decorated with candles to illuminated hallways. This began in Germany as early as 1400’s and have today become the Christmas tree. And of course Christ being born and swaddled in a manger is depicted by the beloved Nativity scene. So you see, Christmas joy is real and good!! So let’s take a looks at last weeks tree lighting at the National Harbor…
